From June 19 to 26, you're invited to take part in a new community event as part of our WAKFU Season 4 crowdfunding campaign. Get out your finest paints, watercolors, colored pencils or even your drawing tablet, and be sure to bring your sense of child-like fun: our coloring workshop is about to begin!

SPANISH

Are you part of the high-flying elite that can color any drawing without going outside the lines? The kind of genius who can match colors with your eyes closed? The type who always won the kindergarten drawing contest with your superb interpretations of dolphins leaping over ocean waves and litters of adorable kittens in rustic wicker baskets?

Then this coloring contest is perfect for you!

Our Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, aimed at giving the heroes of the Brotherhood of the Tofu a new adventure that's worthy of their past glory, has been an astounding success so far. We want to sincerely thank you for the enthusiasm and support you've shown us each and every day since the start of the campaign!

Are you already looking forward to curling up on the couch with a refreshing beverage and some tasty snacks close at hand, ready to discover the latest adventures of Percedal, Evangelyne, Yugo, Amalia, Ruel and the rest? Well, so are they! And who are "they", you might ask? Why, this lovely little family of Tofus, of course! They've cuddled up in the warmth of their nest so that they too can witness their idols' long-awaited return…

How would you like to bring a touch of color to this brotherhood… not of THE Tofu, but of MULTIPLE Tofus?

To take part, you just need to follow a few simple rules:

  • Two types of coloring are possible: manual or digital (all techniques are allowed)
  • Your work must be posted in the comment section of this news.
  • Only one entry per person is allowed.
  • Edited posts/messages will not be considered.
  • No modified images either.
  • Two image formats are accepted: PNG and JPEG.

Note also that Ankama reserves the right to use your creations however it sees fit.

Needless to say, any good contest includes prizes to be won!

Each community will have one winner for manual coloring and one winner for digital coloring. The two winners will receive:

  • A painting emote and a 30-day Bonus Pack

The contest will run from June 19 to June 26 5:00 PM (Paris time). A completely impartial jury will select the winners. Their names will be announced 7 days after the contest ends.

We also encourage you to take a look at the #WakfuRedraw initiative that was started by @NextLVLart on Twitter once our Kickstarter project was officially announced! By all means, take part if the spirit moves you!

You can also continue to follow the campaign's progress.

You've got what it takes to be a hero. Seriously, we mean it! Just like the members of the Brotherhood of the Tofu, you're committed… even downright tenacious. And tough, too. You never give up the fight! Thanks to your determination, our WAKFU season 4 Kickstarter has been even more successful than we expected. If you haven't done so already, you've got one week left to show us your support!

SPANISH

It all went by so fast… It seemed like our carefully designed and meticulously planned campaign had only just gotten underway when, barely a week later, it was approaching the finish line… But this isn't the end! In fact, it's only the beginning… of a new series of thrilling adventures! Haven't contributed yet to the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign that will bring the heroes of the WAKFU animated series back for an encore? The campaign that will open a new chapter in the saga of the Brotherhood of the Tofu? If you're eager to do your part, be sure to act soon! In just one more week, it'll be too late…

Beyond the chance to reunite with Amalia, Yugo, Evangelyne, Percedal, Ruel and the rest, backing this Kickstarter campaign also gives you access to lots of fun surprises. As you've seen, all kinds of events and bonuses have appeared in-game over the course of this campaign. It's our way of saying thank you for your enthusiasm and support, which have truly warmed our hearts over the past two weeks.

We've learned from experience that nothing is ever certain when it comes to crowdfunding campaigns. They evolve, sometimes in unexpected directions (pleasantly unexpected, in this case). And inevitably, there's always a need to adapt. You've probably noticed that a few new pledge levels have been added in this course of this Kickstarter campaign. Perhaps they'll entice some of you to adjust your pledges a bit?

You've got one week left to decide! And one week left to shareyour passion for the WAKFU animated series with your friends and acquaintances. Remember, the more backers we get, the more episodes we'll be able to produce, and the more in-game surprises we'll be able to share with you!

Once again, we're getting ready to take you on an amazing adventure…

You can continue to follow the campaign's progress here.

Now, thanks to you, we're going to restore its image. 13 is the number of episodes you're guaranteed when the next chapter in the adventures of the Brotherhood of the Tofu arrives! Dungeon Rusher #8: Giant Kralove

$

For this eighth Dungeon Rusher, learn a bit more about the Giant Kralove and defeat him to unlock a new ceremonial shield!
DOFUS Touch Kralove Dungeon Rusher

SPANISH

Change to the Lair of the Giant Kralove

If you recall, the way the Lair of the Giant Kralove works was changed in the major update for June. The dungeon will now be accessible automatically, from the 1st through the 7th of each month. We're taking this opportunity to do a Dungeon Rusher for this boss, starting Wednesday!

Entering the dungeon when it's accessible is done the same way as with a standard dungeon: using a key. However, the bunch of keys is not available for this dungeon.

The level of the Giant Kralove, as well as the experience granted by it, have been updated. This monster is now level 180, as stated in the achievement for the dungeon.

To ensure that every player is aware of these changes, a notification will be automatically broadcast on the maps for each city Zaap, as well as on the map for the Otomai Zaap. The notification will be sent to players level 150 and up, and it will be different depending on whether the player has completed the quest to access Otomai Island.

The boss may now drop a new ceremonial pet: the Yakitako.

What is the Giant Kralove?

The Giant Kralove is an ancient creature that has existed for centuries, possibly even millennia.

Otomai describes it as "unique", but there may be or have been other Giant Kraloves, as affirmed by many sources and other stories that refer to such creatures.

The shape of a Giant Kralove is also associated with Osamodas by way of Oktapodas, Protector of the Oceans (who is simply Osamodas in a different form).

The droppings and ink expelled by the Giant Kralove are capable of changing the ecosystem of an entire region (Otomai Island and its peat bog are proof!).

Otomai has speculated that the Giant Kralove is cursed, but the origin and precise nature of this curse remain a mystery. Magicians and followers of the alchemist have attempted to learn more, but they've all ended up drowning in ink or going mad.

Event Concept

From Wednesday, July 1 12:00 PM (Paris time) to Tuesday, July 7 12:00 PM, defeating the Giant Kralove in its dungeon will allow you to score a ceremonial shield.

The Reward

After defeating the Giant Kralove in its dungeon, you'll automatically receive the Trophy Giant Kralove Shield at the end of the fight. The event ends on Tuesday, July 7 12:00 PM (Paris time), after which you will no longer be able to claim your reward.

Good to Know

  • The shield is ceremonial and linked to the character.
  • You can get the shield with several characters on the same account, as long as you re-do the dungeon with each character.
  • You cannot obtain the shield by killing the boss in an arena.
  • For those who read French, visit Papycha.fr to check out their guide to the Lair of the Giant Kralove!

DOFUS Touch and Development

$

0
We've often said that DOFUS Touch and DOFUS no longer have much in common in terms of development. Today we're going to explain things in a little more detail!
DOFUS Touch Development

This article will be a bit more technical than usual, but we're hoping it will provide some answers to your frequently asked questions about DOFUS Touch! That said, we'll do our best to keep it simple so that this is accessible to everyone.

Server and Client

Before we get started, it's important to understand these two aspects, which you may have heard during certain discussions: server development and client development.

Server Development

The so-called "server" environment allows for information to be received from and sent to the player's device. Among other things, it checks the validity of actions and manages their results. The server is also tasked with saving game data.

Client Development

The "client" environment deals with everything the player sees or interacts with, such as game menus, monster animations, etc. These two aspects of development are linked, and for DOFUS Touch to work, the two are closely linked. In simple terms, the client sends requests to the server, and the server processes them.

Practical Example

Let's say Roxor casts the Release spell. The client sends this information to the server, and the server verifies that the player has enough AP and is actually in combat, along with many other variables. It then executes the spell, calculates who gets pushed back, who receives pushback damage, etc. It returns the result to be displayed to the client (the fact that the player casts a spell, the damage, new placements, etc.) to the players in combat as well as to spectators.

Porting DOFUS to DOFUS Touch

It's no secret that DOFUS for PC (version 2.14, to be precise) was used as a base to produce the mobile version DOFUS Touch. This wasn't easy; contrary to what you may hear, it takes more than a simple copy-and-paste procedure.

DOFUS was developed in Flash, whereas DOFUS Touch had to be adapted for a mobile format using HTML5/CSS, Javascript, and (the infamous) WebGL. To illustrate this, we're going to describe some precise aspects of the game!

Game Maps

Several steps were required to properly generate the game maps exported from DOFUS.

The development team started out by generating "raw" maps, but without all the visuals, like scenery. This base manages line of sight and movement blocking and forms a "framework" for the final maps. Loading visual elements comes next, but this has to be divided into three more steps: the foreground, the environment in which the player moves around, and the background.

To illustrate these steps, here are the foreground and background for the main floor of Kerub's house, located in Astrub at [6,-16]:

DOFUS Touch Foreground
Foreground of the map
DOFUS Touch Background
Background of the map
Finally, the components of the scenery are added – "the environment in which the player moves around", as we described it earlier – to achieve the final result:
DOFUS Touch Final Map
These various steps were run by an algorithm. To reduce loading times as much as possible, the foreground and background are always generated as a single unit.

All the visual elements had to be reworked so they could be adapted to DOFUS Touch. These elements are adapted for Flash on PC (.swf format), so they had to be switched to .jpg or .png for the mobile version. Incidentally, the same process was used for monsters and items in the game.

The maps are still in 4:3 format, as this worked best with mobile. And 16:9 format wasn't yet available in DOFUS at the time, anyway!

Interfaces

As with maps, the interfaces designed for Flash (ActionScript) in the PC version had to be reworked for DOFUS Touch. So, the development team took the logic of the Flash source code and switched everything to HTML5/CSS and Javascript.

All the interfaces were tweaked, with no exceptions. Which created a whole set of issues, since Javascript and Flash use a different logic.

Also, the way messages are retrieved from the server is different.

But that's not all!

These examples account for a tiny fraction of the adapting that had to be done and that, in some cases, still has to be done. To cite one last example, this is the case when we decide to reuse the appearance of an existing set in DOFUS. Our team is required to rework the set in Flash format in order to adapt it to DOFUS Touch.

How about now?

As you can see, the PC version had to be completely reworked to be adapted to a mobile format and allow DOFUS Touch to come into the world. Even now, development for the two versions varies considerably, and each version has their own constraints.

Maps

As for game maps, very few of these are taken directly from DOFUS; our level designer [Maewin] produces these from start to finish.

To get a glimpse of this work, there's a video about creating the map for the Mount Neselite zone you can watch!

In any case, the format of maps has changed between DOFUS and DOFUS Touch, so it would be impossible to reuse the DOFUS maps (or vice versa) without having to convert them. This also applies to many other components of the game.

Server Development

Although DOFUS Touch started out with the same server foundation as DOFUS 2.14, they've diverged quite a bit since then. One of our server developers, [Bob], explains it by way of a metaphor:

"It's like building two identical one-story houses. Then each architect takes liberties, based on the demands of each client and the technical specifications that derive from those demands, to add a second, then a third floor to each house. At that point you can't just say 'Let's use the roof of one of the two houses for the other one'. You need to make adjustments to avoid leaks and keep the roof from collapsing!"
In slightly more technical terms, there is no way to simply "copy and paste" the things you want to see in the game. The foundations to support new features aren't always available or aren't yet compatible with certain decisions taken for DOFUS Touch. The requirements for certain features diverge in complex ways, especially in terms of the technologies used and the code structure, which may not be visible to players.

To demonstrate this, let's imagine that for DOFUS Touch, a player is represented as a single unit called "player", but for DOFUS, this unit has been split up into several smaller units, each a different aspect, to make this easier to manage. For instance, you'd have "the player's social information", "the player's characteristics", "the player's bank", etc. As a result of this, in DOFUS Touch, to get information about the player's guild, we would do "player --> function that retrieves the guild", whereas in DOFUS, we'd use "player --> retrieve the player's social info --> retrieve the guild". And these differences keep increasing over time.

To provide a second example, DOFUS could use a new type of database and its new features could be built on that. Players would view this change as completely transparent, and the game would stay the same. But if we wanted to reuse these concepts, we'd need to adapt it for our own database or adopt this new database and change our entire program as a result.

These two topics are just two examples out of dozens that, over the course of months, separate us technically from DOFUS and make potential transfers increasingly tricky.

There are many reasons for all these differences between the two versions, including the format of the game, its technical requirements, its resources, as well as its needs relative to the project.

Game Design

Game design consists of establishing the rules of the game. For DOFUS Touch, this involves defining:

  • how character classes are played (spell creation, stat balancing, etc.)
  • what interactions players may have (trading, chat, challenges, friends, guilds, etc.)
  • how players can interact with the game (monster combat, professions, etc.)
  • how the game will react to the player's interactions
  • rules for how the World of Twelve works (using Zaaps, item recipes for the economy, etc.)
  • the various game modes and how they work (alliance versus alliance, Kolossium, Ascension Island, etc.)
  • how to balance equipment and set their stats
  • storylines and writing corresponding quests

Once again, although DOFUS and DOFUS Touch were both built on version 2.14, they quickly took different directions for the same reasons as those already described with respect to server development.

As with server development, each game rule has evolved differently over time. So it doesn't always make sense to assume that an idea used in DOFUS will be entirely functional in DOFUS Touch, and vice versa.

A revamp of Incarnam won't be done in the same way in DOFUS Touch as in DOFUS, since the players of each game don't exactly behave in the same way. This is because the players of each platform (mobile versus PC) have different profiles.

Nevertheless, certain ideas may remain essentially the same, since the two projects originate from the same game.

Regarding story differences between DOFUS Touch and DOFUS, you'll find an article on this topic here.
DOFUS Touch Krosmoz

Mobile Format

On top of all this, there's a considerable amount of work involving the prerogatives of Google and Apple. They regularly request certain technical changes, which sometimes require several days of full-time work done by one or more developers. We naturally must follow these instructions, or else DOFUS Touch could be removed from the app stores!

Google and Apple constantly release new operating systems (or software development kits (SDKs)), and it's essential that we keep up with them. Whenever some version of their system stops working, we're required to migrate to the new version, which can present a new set of issues. For example, we used to use a certain webview on Android that allowed us to force WebGL on all mobile devices. Following a required update, this webview became incompatible and forced us to use the Android webview, which now prevents us from forcing the use of WebGL.

For longtime readers, the Android webview updates constantly and our HTML5/CSS may no longer be compatible. For example, Apple recently required us to switch to their WK webview; we had to work on this compatibility, or DOFUS Touch would no longer be kept up-to-date.

All of this is just the tip of the iceberg. But now you know more about the technical operation of DOFUS Touch, along with certain differences relative to the PC version of DOFUS. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section!

A new type of pack is being added to the shop: Progress Packs! Read all about it!
DOFUS Touch Progress Packs

We know you appreciate all the cosmetic items available in DOFUS Touch. So we'd like to continue in that direction, and also beef up the offering in our in-game shop!

Today we're releasing Progress Packs.

The Concept

Progress Packs will become available throughout your adventure, based on your character's level. And they can only be purchased with real currency.

These packs will unlock a number of cosmetic items, including attire, emotes, goultines, bonus packs, and services. And they won't cost you a fortune!

These packs will be available indefinitely. However, each of them can only be purchased once per year and per account.

Tiers

Here is a list of all the packs, with their contents and tiers, which will be considered progress packs:

In addition to the level requirement, the packs will be unlocked after a certain time played in-game.

"I'm already level 200; do I still get them?"

If you're already at a high level that would unlock several packs at once, you can absolutely get these whenever you like, using a new "Packs" category in the Prestige shop.

"Why create these new packs?"

As DOFUS TOUCH is a free game without any ads, the shop is our main source of revenue. We'd like to continue prioritizing cosmetic elements so that the shop will have a bigger offering; we don't want DOFUS Touch to become a "pay-to-win" game.

These packs will provide players with cosmetic items as well as goultines, bonus packs, and services, at regular intervals and competitive prices, based on how much they've advanced in the game. In other words, the packs will allow players to customize their character a bit more throughout the adventure!

A Look at the WAKFU Season 4 Kickstarter with Djinn!

For three weeks, we lived for the WAKFU Season 4 Kickstarter. It was a constant thrill. To be honest, it got our hearts beating faster than usual! But it's nothing compared to the adventures that await the Brotherhood of the Tofu. And that await YOU! Here's a video of Djinn looking back at an emotional last several days.

SPANISH

Well, our crowdfunding campaign for WAKFU Season 4 is officially over. In a period of three weeks, you, our community, gave us lots of warm fuzzy feelings. Your support, your enthusiasm, your overwhelming excitement – let's be honest, this love you openly professed for the Brotherhood of the Tofu left us deeply touched. And we're already fired up to begin production on this new chapter! Members of the Brotherhood of the Tofu are excited as well…

Speaking of the Brotherhood, this just in: Our good friend Ruel, caught up in all the merriment, seems to have taken his yearly bath earlier than expected. So he'll be fresh as a newborn Enutrof when he embarks on this new adventure! Pretty incredible, right? Ruel reportedly stated, "Any chance I could get a few kamas from this Kickstarter? I mean, hey, times are hard…" Some people never change!

We also heard from Evangelyne and her overexcited husband. She's holding up, and she says the urge to throw a humble pie in her beloved's face has only crossed her mind a few times, honest… As for Percedal, he had this to say:

"Woohoooo!! Hahaha! AWESOME! I'M READY TO FIGHT! Yeahhh!!!"

We can say with some certainty that this particular Iop is in good spirits.

Can't wait to see them? Neither can we! Until then, Djinn takes a look back at the incredible experience that was the Kickstarter. In the form of a video, but mostly in the form of thanks!

Tensions are always running high between Crakillian and the matriarch Kanigrula, which serves no one. Enter our new writing contest to try and persuade Kanigrula to bury the hatchet!
DOFUS Touch Writing Contest

For years, the Kanigs kept the Minerocks under their control. But after Cania was suddenly flooded, the Minerock people were able to free themselves from Kanig oppression. The two clans now reside in neighboring lands, and the conflict opposing them has persisted.

The Kanigs, deprived of drinking water, are looking for a way to once again invade the Minerocks' land to acquire this scarce resource. As they seek to reclaim supremacy, some of the Minerocks now aspire to live freely, and maybe even peacefully.

Contest Concept

In the comments section of this article, write a letter (in a roleplay style and using the game lore) addressed to Kanigrula to try and convince her to bury the hatchet with the Minerocks.

Each player may submit one missive of 250 words or less, which must comply with forum rules.

The contest starts now, and will end on Sunday, July 26 at 11:59 PM (Paris time).

Prizes

Our team will select the two most persuasive letters, and their authors will be rewarded with:

  • 10 Sharivakens (more info)
  • 5,000 Goultines
  • The "Write" emote
